Title: Playful powders

Context: Experimental ceramic course at Parsons The New School

Techniques: mold-making, jiggering/ jollying, slip-casting, glazing, oxides

Experimentations: slip-casting process, tools for glaze’s application

Realization: Autumn 2018

Description:

During my exchange at Parsons, I chose a course in ceramic, practice that I wanted to deveIop further. Focusing on glazes and mold making my experimentations were oriented on how to produce different ceramics with a same mold.

I experimented different types of mold making (jiggering, jollying, parts molds...) and ended on working on the slip casting process. When improving my techniques, I did experimentations with oxides, testing different recipes and playing with their application.

Design of porcelain plates and bowls.

1/ Playing with glazes (oxides/tools)

When working with glazes, I first searched how I could apply it on the bisque. For that purpose, I made small tools of wood, paper and plastic. I re-used also painting and kitchen tools and played with spray, air, consistancies... My purpose was to plays with tools to apply oxides or glazes.

Testing recipes, it was the occasion for me to get familiar with different components’ caracteristics.

2/ Exploring jiggering and jollying

To discover this new techniques, I designed a set of plates for porcelain slip. My aim was to experiment how I could obtain different shape with a same mold.

Process: Changing every 2/3 minutes the mold’s inclinations with variable slip quantities. Therefore, the porcelain dries in different layers and create those petal shapes.
