Title: Helper’s hat

Description:
In August 2017 I was part of the class of the artist Michael Beutler at the Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg where we had to manage the concept of tools. Tools to communicate, produce, consume and create usability.
We designed and built our living and working space (construction of worktops for the kitchen, bar, storage wall, segmantation of the workshops, rest area, ...).
A group of 6 people, that I was part of, organized meals for the 28 artists we were. We produced the necessary tools according to the collective desire (food, type of cooking, rituals, ...).
In addition to this co-creation around the preparation and consumption of the meal, I set up a project support service: Helper’s Hat. If someone was free to help (and learn from other people), this person would wore the hat in order to signify his availability. This service was quickly adopted by the whole group.
The last days of classes I realized a book
tracing the life which had been ours for this month.

The Helper’s Hat:
Being the youngest of the studio (19 yo), I felt that I needed to put myself in the role of the apprentice. I wanted to help others in their production but above all learn from it. However, I wasn’t alone in that case!
There were 3 type of needs:
- learning new skills (need a master)
- requiring support in making (need an apprentice)
- changing his ideas by working on something else...
Thus, I made those hats in order to facilitate the exchange and communication among us. We weren’t ineriting in vain in the studio anymore.

The experience book:
I printed a book showing what was our life in Salzburg for the month: our dinners, tools, projects, discoveries, trips...
pages connected with a tainted woolen thread of our own making.
This was for us.
